In the Romantic era the Evans Gambit (4.b4) became fashionable, electrifying games with pawn sacrifices and swift attacks. A notorious beginner's trap is the Scholar's Mate attempt (4.Qh5 targeting f7), which is easily refuted by accurate defense and loses time for White. In the Two Knights, White must handle the Fried Liver Attack with great precision — underestimating Black's compensation after the piece sacrifice is a frequent error. Black players often make the mistake of trading the dark-squared bishop for a knight too early, leaving weaknesses on f5 or g6. In the Giuoco Pianissimo, impatience — launching central operations before completing development — typically gives White the initiative back immediately.
